Weijing Sun, MD

Weijing Sun, MD, is an international expert in gastrointestinal cancers. He focuses on the treatment and clinical research of GI malignancies, mainly on the development of new drugs and biologic/targeted-oriented agents in treatment/therapy. This includes translational and immune research of GI cancers with great experiences in the early phase clinical trial (phase I, II) designing, protocol development and conduction. Many of these have been published. He has also served as a member of ECOG-ACRIN GI Core Committee and the NCI GI Cancer Steering Committee Hepatobiliary Task Force. He has served as principal investigator for many investigator-initiated studies and pharmaceutical company trials.

Dr. Sun is currently the Sprint Professor of medical oncology, a professor of medical oncology and cancer biology and director of the Medical Oncology Division at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He is also the associate director of The University of Kansas Cancer Center.

He graduated from Shanghai Medical University, now merged with Fudan University. He completed his internal medicine residency at Loyola University Medical Center and his hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. He served his assistant and associate professorship and was the director of GI medical oncology at the University of Pennsylvania until 2012. He then served his professorship and was director of GI medical oncology and co-director of GI cancer research excellency at the University of Pittsburgh until August 2017 when he accepted his current position at The University of Kansas Cancer Center.

He has authored many publications, including original clinical research articles, reviews and invited editorial comments in a variety of peer-reviewed journals. He has also written chapters as a GI oncology expert for several medical textbooks including WebMD and Textbook of Gastroenterology. He is editor-in-chief of the “Multidisciplinary Therapy of GI Malignancies.” He has written more than 130 publications and serves as a member of editorial boards or review committees for several professional journals. He serves as deputy editor-in-chief of the Journal of Hematology & Oncology and as associate editor of the Journal of Practical Oncology.

Dr. Sun served on the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) scientific program committee, in both colorectal and noncolorectal cancer subcommittees, and is currently serving as head of the colorectal cancer education committee of the 2021 ASCO annual meeting. He serves as the activity director of the International Society of Gastrointestinal Oncology (ISGIO) and was recently elected as president-elect of the organization. He also served as president and board chair of the Chinese American Hematologist-Oncologist Network (CAHON).

In addition, he has been named as a top doctor by U.S. News & World Report and local publications.
